Mexican Riviera Maya

Probably the most outstanding feature of this part of the globe is the Caribbean Sea with its turquoise waters and white sandy beaches. If you are into snorkeling or scuba diving you’ll love this place: the second largest barrier reefs runs right in front of our noses. You can also snorkel and dive in regional cenotes, sweet water sink holes that are typical for the Yucatan peninsula. They are openings in the lime stone and are connected to a giant subterranean river system that flows into the ocean. Guided cave dives are offered in various cenotes. (see pictures below)

There is an abundant offer of things that you can do to reconnect with nature: ocean or lagoon kayaking, kite surfing, catamaran cruising, swimming, snorkeling or scuba diving, horseback riding, explore the jungle, have a spa treatment, or just enjoy endless beach walks.

The Sian Ka’an biosphere reserve was declared UNESCO world heritage in 1987, and is a bird watcher’s paradise. Watch the clip for details. The Bacalar lagoon is said to be of seven different shades of blue. There is a cenote within one section of the lagoon.

If you feel like escaping to an island: visit Cozumel which is among the five best places in the world for diving, or Isla Mujeres with its Caribbean charm, or the more peaceful islands Contoy and Holbox where you can swim with whale sharks.

The most popular archaeological site of the Yucatan peninsula is in Chichen Itza. It’s considered one of the Seven World Wonders, and is known to be especially powerful during the spring and fall equinoxes. The ancient city of Cobá, once an important traffic hub, is located in the jungle. Overlooking the ocean, the Tulum temple served as a calendar to indicate important dates. Ek Balam’s ruins are not as well known, but you’ll be surprised in what excellent condition the wall paintings are. Truly a hot insider tip!

The Mayan territory covered Tabasco, Chiapas, Campeche, Yucatan, Quintana Roo, Belize, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras and partially Nicaragua.

Mexico’s Pacific Coast. Featuring all-inclusive hotels with luxury spas, award winning cuisine, exciting nightlife and unique cultural ecotourism, Riviera Nayarit, on Mexico’s beautiful Pacific Coast is tops on the vacation radar.

Riviera Nayarit offers a truly authentic vacation experience with a subtle touch of modern convenience. A perfect balance of luxury and tradition, this Pacific Gem boasts PGA designed signature golf courses, nearly 100 miles of golden coastline, spectacular mountains and quaint seaside villages.

“In addition to the natural beauty and perfect climate, Riviera Nayarit’s variety of hotels and accommodations.

Nestled along miles of coastline between the Sierra Madre Mountains and the Pacific Ocean, Riviera Nayarit is just 10 miles north of Puerto Vallarta’s airport. With three main resort areas, Riviera Nayarit vacationers have the option to truly customize their destination experience with a variety of modern hotels and luxury resorts.

Punta Mita offers travelers beauty both on land and sea with its unique volcanic rock formations that flow into the ocean. It also hosts one of Mexico’s most exclusive golf courses, the Four Seasons Golf Club Punta Mita.

Nuevo Vallarta and Flamingos attracts travelers searching for quality accommodations in an unforgettable setting. Offering the best of Mexico, this area includes a modern marina with 200 slips, a shopping mall, international restaurants, three golf courses, a water park, two dolphin centers and miles of unforgettable golden sand beaches.

Bucerias mixes old world charm with modern sophistication. Travelers make their way to this picturesque town for an insight of old Mexico. With tequila tours, quiet beaches and local artifact shopping, this culturally rich area appeals to even the most discriminating palate heralding international cuisine, fresh caught fish and local authentic eateries.

Accommodations for every taste and budget can be found in Riviera Nayarit. The majority of Americans choose resorts in Nuevo Vallarta or Punta de Mita, but having undergone major renovations, any of the resort properties are sure to please.

Riviera Nayarit has also become quite popular for destination weddings, as it is the perfect playground for couples and those looking for a luxurious vacation experience. Some resorts including the luxurious Dreams Resorts and Spas provide free weddings and onsite wedding coordinators, which will put any soon-to-be-wed couple at ease. With scenic mountain backdrops and lush tropical ecosystems, many couples have little to no convincing to do when inviting their friends and family to share in their special day on this magnificent stretch of Pacific Treasure. The wedding party and guests can take advantage of Apple Vacations special group rates and services.

Although beautiful and relaxing, Riviera Nayarit will also satisfy the appetite of even the most adventurous of travelers. With action-packed excursions, Riviera Nayarit’s tropical jungle landscape offers activities that include jungle canopy zipline adventures, land and water excursions, swimming with dolphins or world class marlin and sail fishing. Riviera Nayarit is also a top surfing spot and many of the resorts can arrange for lessons. For surfing wannabes, boogie boarding is an easy, fun alternative that all ages can tackle.

Riviera Nayarit, Mexico’s Secret Treasure, is quickly becoming the vacation destination hotspot. With accommodations that appeal to a broad travel audience, Riviera Nayarit needs no advertising, for its beauty and appeal speaks for itself. An unforgettable vacation experience is waiting for your clients in beautiful Riviera Nayarit.

The cool crisp air fills your nostrils as you don your scuba gear. The dive master completes a roll call and provides insight into what you can expect below. “The anchor is in 70 feet of water. To the east about 20 yards is a vast kelp bed. . . ” With the brief over, it your turn to giant stride into the water.

The warm Caribbean Sea, cool Pacific Ocean, or the waters of the Red Sea trickles down your back as your wet-suit reminds you to zip it up the last inch. A quick “okay” signal to the dive master and you begin your descent. At 10 feet your surroundings look deep and blue. As your eyes adjust the ocean floor is even more spectacular than your dive master described. Then, out of the corner of your right eye, something darts quickly behind a clump of kelp. Okay, it’s cool. It’s a sea lion playing with your bubbles. You chuckle as you equalize – this is only the first dive! Truly amazing experience.

SCUBA DIVING COZUMEL

Cozumel is known in the dive industry as one of the best dive locations in the world. Cozumel is the Mexican Caribbean’s largest island, just 12 miles off the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula. Cozumel is 28 miles / 9 meters long and 10 miles / 2 meters wide. Located near Cancun; it is a famous destination for divers and non divers alike, as even after decades as a popular vacation resort, it remains a serene, quiet and undiscovered piece of paradise. The climate is subtropical.

Most of the diving and snorkeling activity on Cozumel is focused on the reefs and shallow coral formations that extend from the southern tip of the island to just south of San Miguel on the west coast. All of the Cozumel beaches are protected and extend from the ferry pier in downtown San Miguel to the southern tip of the island, many of which are protected as part of an underwater national park. Fishing is not allowed in this area. However, you can book a deep sea fishing excursion with many opertaors on the island.

There are two main reef systems surrounding Cozumel, Colombia and Palancar reefs. Easilt accessible with plateaus beginning in less than 30 feet / 9 meters of water, Cozumel reefs boast abundant underwater sea life and brilliant colors. At Chankanaab Lagoon, one of the most visited sites on the island, divers and snorkelers can observe small coral and limestone formations at 6 to 30 feet / 2 to 9 meters.

Cozumel, known to the Maya as Island of the Swallows is located off the eastern coast of Mexico ‘s Yucatán Peninsula , opposite Playa del Carmen . It is one of the eight municipalities ( municipios ) of the state of Quintana Roo . Cozumel is a popular tourist destination renowned for its scuba diving . The main town on the island is San Miguel .

The island is about 48 km (30 miles) north-south and 16 km (10 miles) east-west, and is the largest island of Mexico. It is about 20 km (12 miles) from the mainland, and some 60 km (36 miles) south of Cancún . Nearly everybody in Cozumel lives in the town of San Miguel (pop. est. 90,000 in 2003 ), which is on the western shore. The rest of the island is low, flat, and densely vegetated.

HISTORY OF COZUMEL, MEXICO

Pronounced Co·zu·mel (kō zu-mĕl), the first Maya settled in Cozumel over 2,000 years ago. The island derives its name from the Mayan words Cuzam (swallow) and Lumil (land of), which formed the word Cuzamil (land of swallows). The word changed over time to the current spelling, Cozumel.

During the period between 300 and 900 A.D., Cozumel became an important sanctuary in the Yucatan region. At that time, priests were very high up in the social classes, which propogated religious ceremonies. Mayan women from all over the Yucatán Peninsula and beyond made pilgrimages here to pay tribute to Ixchel, the goddess of fertility and the moon. There was a temple erected in her honor at San Gervasio, near the centre of the island.
